Being a life long fan of Social Distortion I was pleased to see that they ended this two year long tour in my hometown of San Antonio, Texas. If I could change one thing it would be the venue of Backstage Live, which is not the level of classy theaters that Social Distortion is use to performing in which is more like venues like the House of Blues. Therefore the sound was not the best; however, Social Distortion was amazing and on top of their game like usual… After opening with the staple, So Far Away, the band blasted through several of their classics like Bad Luck, Highway 101, Don’t Take Me For Granted, Machine Gun Blues, 1945, Telling Them, Cold Feelings, among many others. The highlights of the night were Sometimes I Do, Bakersfield, and especially the new blues tune called Black Magic. This is a song from the 1994 sessions for WLWHWT that was forgotten over the years according to Mike Ness. This tune has all the classic Social D. signature style. Blues-based rock and roll with a strong guitar lead by Mike Ness backed by a powerful back beat thanks to bassist Brent Harding and drummer Dave Hidalgo Jr. Jonny Wickersham was hot with his lead guitar and vocal harmonies too as well throughout the evening too. I wished Danny McGough was playing his B-3 organ, piano, and accordian a little more than on selected songs. If the new song is any indication as what the new Social Distortion record will sound like then it will be timeless rock and roll that this band has been doing for the past 33 years……
