Earlier this week (January 23), RAC and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, AFL-CIO (AFTRA) and American Federation of Musicians (AFM) members converged on Sacramento calling on legislators to support Senate Bill 1246 (Murray), legislation to repeal California Labor Code Section 2855, subdivision B, because it unfairly excludes recording artists from the same protection of law afforded all other working persons in California who sign a personal services contract. They came together to repeal the amendment to the state's "seven-year" statute which amendment exempts musicians from the seven-year limit on entertainment contracts.  RAC, AFTRA and AFM members--including Don Henley, Carole King, John Fogerty, Beck, Stevie Nicks, Ray Parker, Jr., Sheryl Crow, the Deftones, Paul Doucette (Matchbox Twenty), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Dexter Holland (Offspring) and Paul Almeida, President of the Department for Professional Employees of the AFL-CIO;John Connolly, President AFTRA; and John Russum, Executive Director AFTRA LA--met with legislators to discuss their support of SB 1246 (Murray).  Joining them were Dick Gabriel, National Assistant to the
President of American Federation of Musicians; representatives of the Hollywood Entertainment Labor Council; Tom Rankin, President, California Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO; Art Pulaski, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the California Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO; and Miguel Contreras,President, Los Angeles County Labor Federation. RAC represents the economic and creative interests of featured recording artists whose interests are not always directly represented by other organizations or the recording industry.  In the past, RAC members have successfully testified before congress to repeal "work for hire"copyright legislation which was detrimental to recording artists.

Social Distortion has recently launched a 20-night tour with multiple nights in Los Angeles, Anaheim, San Diego and Las Vegas. All dates
have sold out in record time and the initial shows have been some of their best ever. Here's a recent live review that ran in the LA Times:

IT'S CLEAR THAT SOCIAL DISTORTION IS BACK - LOS ANGELES TIMES - 1/18/01
By: RANDY LEWIS
Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness wasted neither time nor sentiment Tuesday at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, glaring out over the capacity crowd and launching a blazing, 90-minute show by shouting "Let's get this done!"

If Ness sounded like a man embarking on a necessary but not entirely enjoyable task, it's not because the veteran Orange County punk band's return after a long hiatus forces his burgeoning solo career to the back burner.

This tour, which includes 14 sold-out nights at the House of Blues clubs in West Hollywood and Anaheim, is the band's first since the death last year of longtime rhythm guitarist Dennis Danell, Ness' soul mate in the punk wars.

Ness spoke of Danell twice Tuesday--before "Don't Take Me For Granted," a song he introduced in May at a Danell memorial show, and later to say that an album coming this year would be dedicated to him.

Ness, as always, vented through his songs. In such vintage numbers as "Dear Lover" and "Bad Luck," Ness let his deepest feelings out.

Former Cadillac Tramps guitarist Johnny Wickersham has taken over rhythm duties, accompanying Ness, bassist John Maurer and drummer Charlie Quintana with an energy that fueled songs without mimicking Danell's rolling sheets of white noise, which had defined Social D.'s sound.

Odelay Kiddies,

Once again we're put into one of those unexpected, unexplainable situations that makes life seem like we're running from a continuous wall of crap that's right on your heels. We've had time to pick ourselves up, dust off the dirt and do what's right. We keep looking forward and staying ahead in order to make A KICK ASS FLIPN' SOCIAL D. RECORD! A record that makes every SxDx member, friend and fan proud as well as revert back to the first feeling that we had experiencing Social D.I think Mike sums the new record up, "So this record will be a departure from our others without losing our signature style. It has a real '70's feel and a real 2000 feel. It's definitely a balance of the two." I'm going to do what I have to do to fill my slot and continue the legacy of Social Distortion.I would like to personally thank and dedicate my efforts to every promoter, security guard, bartender, waitress, dancer, fan, friend and family member for the last fifteen years of shaping me and my memories of Social D. I would especially like to thank the person who shared all these memories with me, the man I loved and consider my brother - Dennis Eric Danell 1961-2000

Social Distortion have started preparing for their next album. With many songs written, including "Don't Take Me for Granted" and "Nickels and Dimes," Mike Ness is excited about the direction of the new album."I want every record to be different from the last one but I also want to keep continuity with our sound," said Ness. "So this record will be a departure from our others without losing our signature style. It has a real '70's feel and a real 2000 feel. It's definitely a balance of the two."Social D will again work with producer James Saez. Saez has already worked with Social Distortion and Mike Ness a few times, producing Ness' two solo albums and SD's "Live at the Roxy.". He has lent himself not only as producer, engineer and mixer but has also played guitar and percussion as well. He has a long list of other credits including working with bands like Nine Inch Nails, System of a Down and Porno for Pyros.Joining Mike and John in the studio will be Charlie Quintana and Johnny Wickersham, who both recently played with Social D at the When The Angels Sing benefit.

Dennis Danell, longtime guitarist for seminal punk rock band Social Distortion, died on Tuesday, February 29th.

Dennis Danell, the 38-year-old guitarist for punk band Social Distortion, died of natural causes on Tuesday February 29th. Danell is survived by his wife Christie, 3 year-old son and 6 month-old daughter.

Danell, a founding member of Social Distortion, enjoyed a prosperous recording career with the band since it's inception in 1979. Over his 20 years as their guitarist and backing vocalist, Danell lent his gritty, high-octane style to the band, making him an integral link in the Social Distortion sound. With Social Distortion, Danell's album credits include Mainliner (1981), Mommy's Little Monster (1982), the punk rock documentary film Another State Of Mind (1982), Prison Bound (1985), Social Distortion (1990) Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell (1992) White Light, White Heat, White Trash (1996) and Live At The Roxy (1998).

On break from Social Distortion since recording the live album, Danell was busy recording local Orange County bands in SD's long time recording studio, Casbah in Fullerton.

Social Distortion singer Mike Ness said, 'I am saddened beyond any possible form of expression. Dennis and I have been friends since boyhood, starting Social Distortion while we were in high school. My deepest regrets to his family.'
